Policy Council & Board

Policy Council is the decision -making body of Head Start. Policy Council is made up of at least 51% parents of currently enrolled students in the program. Other Council members include professionals in the education, health, business, and social service fields as well as past parents and other interested people within the community. The Director and the Program Governance manager are invited to attend Policy Council meetings, but are not members and have voting rights. Staff members may attend meetings in a consultative, non-voting capacity upon request of the Council.

Policy Council members have input into decisions made about the nature and overall operation of the program. They assist in developing and approving all program goals each year. Members also have input into the recruitment, screening, and hiring of all employees. Therefore, they need to have a clear understanding of what their responsibilities mean. Head Start Performance Standards are used for all decision-making.

Policy Council meets once a month throughout the year with a special summer schedule. Officers are elected from within the Policy Council.
