Family Involvement

Families of Distinction and STAR families

This program recognizes families that have demonstrated a commitment to their child's education while enrolled in KSC Head Start. At the end of every school year, a Banquet is held and prizes are awarded to qualifying families. We use a point system to determine eligibility. Families earning at least 285 points are considered a "Family Of Distinction."

Parents who go above and beyond receive the coveted STAR STATUS. Star families get special recognition at the Banquet and are awarded larger prize packages. To qualify as a "Star Family," parents/guardians will earn bonus points for participating in extra activities and doing Community Service/Projects. To become a Star Family, you must meet the 285 Family points plus 110 points for the STAR STATUS for a total of 395 points.

Policy Council & Board

Policy Council is the decision -making body of Head Start. Policy Council is made up of at least 51% parents of currently enrolled students in the program. Other Council members include professionals in the education, health, business, and social service fields as well as past parents and other interested people within the community. The Director and the Program Governance manager are invited to attend Policy Council meetings, but are not members and have voting rights. Staff members may attend meetings in a consultative, non-voting capacity upon request of the Council.

Policy Council members have input into decisions made about the nature and overall operation of the program. They assist in developing and approving all program goals each year. Members also have input into the recruitment, screening, and hiring of all employees. Therefore, they need to have a clear understanding of what their responsibilities mean. Head Start Performance Standards are used for all decision-making.

Policy Council meets once a month throughout the year with a special summer schedule. Officers are elected from within the Policy Council.

Parent Committees

All parents are automatically members of your Head Start site's Parent Committee and are encouraged to be active members. The meetings will be held during a time that is convenient to the majority of the parents. Childcare can be provided during the meetings and transportation will also be provided, if needed. However, arrangements must be scheduled ahead of time by contacting your family advocate.

Election of Committee Officers are held at the very first meeting. You will elect a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and a Secretary. These officers will lead your parent committee and represent your group at Policy Council. During regular meetings you will help plan many exciting activities for yourself and for your child, including field trips, parties, and site activities. You will also be able to choose topics for training that can be held during your parent meetings. Oftentimes, these meetings will include sharing food together, making a craft, or learning a new skill.

All parents and volunteers are required to get a limited criminal background check. This includes parents chaperoning on field trips. Head Start will provide a limited background check.
